Professor Dirk Messner is Co-Chair of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU). Professor Messner is also Director of the United Nations University – Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) Bonn, and Co-Director of the Center for Advanced Studies on Global Cooperation Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen, where he teaches political science.
Since 2004, he represents WBGU in the German Commission for UNESCO. Before he was Academic Director of the Institute of Development and Peace, Duisburg (1996-2003), Professor for International Political Economy at the University of Munich (2003), Director of the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), Bonn (2004-2018).
Professor Messner carried out numerous research activities in Latin America and Asia. He is member of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development. He is also Co-Chair in SDSN Germany (since 2013) and Co-Chair n T20 (since 2015).
Professor Messner will become president of the German Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt, UBA) as of 1st January 2020.
